WW1 RPPC question about frontline photos

Hi. New to this site. I collect WW! RPPCs, primarily from the German side, as they tend to be most interesting. I've done online research about how photos were taken and delivered on the front lines, as many cards are of soldiers in trenches, but there's a dearth of info out there.

I'm particularly interested in how the photos came about. Were many of them generated by the soldiers themselves with the small cameras that existed then? I recently read that enterprising photographers went to the front, took photos on demand, and then actually printed on site and then delivered them! Does anyone have info on this that they can share with me? Thanks in advance! Paul
