RA**  This is a beautiful undated but modern published official postcard from Londons Royal Academy Of Arts for this historic painting of William Hodges and The Ghauts At Benares from 1787 with artist details, dates, dimensions etc & Royal Academy Of Arts logo on reverse being the official souvenir from when exhibited unused and mint.

Hodges's Diploma work depicts the broad flights of steps known as _ghauts_ or _ghats_, lining the Western bank of the Ganges at Benares, which enable ceremonial bathing. Although he worked from sketches made in India, Hodges painted this picture in London. In his studio he applied European Neoclassical painting conventions to the compositional arrangement and finish. The result is a polished picturesque scene rather than a strictly topographical one.
