the Karagheusian News
We've all heard the song by Bruce Springsteen from "My Hometown", "....they're closing down the mill across the railroad tracks, those jobs are going boy, they ain't coming back...."
Well, that was my hometown, and my parents worked in that mill. This is an original copy of the company newsletter. It's painful to read in some ways, there is a message from the President of A & M. Karagheusian talking about the company's optimism about business, the opening of a new venture outside Philadelphia and the success of their carpeting in great placesin the United States.
This was 1956.
In 1958, "the mill" as it was called locally began laying off workers and moving their jobs south. Labor was less expensive and the unions weren't yet active in the south. Many workers lost their pensions and were left cold when "the mill" closed forever in 1964, leaving Freehold, N.J. workers unemployed and with few prospects.
This was Vol 11., NO. 10 distributed in August of 1956.
There are four (4) pages, measuring 10 1/2" wide x 16" in length.
The first page is slit were the newsletter has been folded for so many years. However, it is completely readable.
There are stories about the future of the company, the activities of the two factories (Freehold and Roselle, N.J.), tidbits about employee work and wedding anniversaries and more.
It is a great historical look-back at what made small town American and the challenges of early business.
