The mill is a national monument. In 1804 on the right bank of the northern branch of the trench in valkenburg a mill built by bertrand loisel which was originally of french descent. Because of its origins this mill was called the french mill. The mill was right across the oil mill built (later as bark or looimolen) which was built on the left and was already mentioned in the 16th century. In 1926 permission was obtained to replace the two wooden water wheels on one wheel. Because of problems with the regulation of the water in the trench leaves new wheel could not be placed earlier than in 1929.
