The balloon farm frankfort new york carl e. Myers postcard 1908 the balloon farm frankfort new york carl e. Myers postcard 1908 click images to enlarge description very attractive and historic postcard showing the ballon farm. Message written and signed by carl e. Myers. According to wikipedia: the balloon farm, originally called the gates manshion, is a historic home located at frankfort in herkimer county, new york. It includes the gates-myers residence, built in 1878. It is an imposing, nearly square, three-story eclectic late victorian dwelling built of dimension lumber above a cut-stone foundation.[2] the house was built in fred gates, the owner of a match company. He sold it in 1889 to carl edgar myers (1842–1925), an aeronautical engineer. Myers converted the house and the nearby lands into an aeronautical institution known as "balloon farm." his wife mary, known as "carlotta, the lady aeronaut", made many ascents in balloons in aid of his experiments.[3] she is noted by a historical marker near the property.[2] according to carl edgar myers - inventing aviation: carl edgar myers was a balloonist and inventor from mohawk, herkimer county, new york, who collaborated with his wife, mary "carlotta" myers.[1] on a slightly later patent, we have carl filing solely with "carlotta" myers serving among witnesses.[2] later still, we have carl as being located in frankfort, herkimer county, ny, and with mary h. Myers acting among witnesses.[3] given the overall context this is fairly definitely the name of carl's wife, inclusive of the middle initial, without the pseudonym. Myers was chosen to be director of aeronautics at the st. Louis world's fair but was soon replaced due to accusations of obnoxious behavior. Nevertheless the myerses continued to participate in the exhibitions, with occasional drama arising from friction with the organizers.[4] the property was listed on the national register of historic places in 1998.[1] sent 1908, divided back with edge tearing at bottom, otherwise light corner bumping and toning. Fair-fine condition. Base shipping is $2.00 domestic and $3.00 international. Items selling for over $20.00 will be sent at ground advantage starting at $4.50. Purchases at/over $100.00 must be insured. All items/orders selling for over $100.00 will be based upon final sale price. Seller will combine multiple purchases.
