This is an original real photo postcard (RPPC) showing the interior of a Salt Lake City streetcar, taken during a sight-seeing excursion on March 31, 1914. The postcard is postmarked Reno, Nevada, April 1, 1914, and includes the sender’s note:“On St-Car — Salt Lake City — March 31–1914 — Sight-seeing excursion.”The photograph captures an exceptional view inside an early electric streetcar—an angle that is far less common than exterior traction images. The car is filled with passengers dressed in typical 1910s attire:Men in high-collared shirts, neckties, and three-piece suitsA woman in a stylish hat and coat seated near the windowOverhead leather grab straps and racks running the length of the carWooden slat flooring and wicker-style seat backs typical of pre-WWI traction interiorsThrough the front of the car you can see the conductor or motorman standing in the vestibule, adding authenticity and charm to this period snapshot.Salt Lake City’s streetcar system was an essential part of its urban growth in the early 20th century. Electric streetcars had replaced horse-drawn transit by the 1890s, and by the 1910s the network was extensive—connecting downtown, residential neighborhoods, and scenic routes. Sightseeing excursions, like the one mentioned here, were a popular way for visitors to take in the city, including the State Capitol, Temple Square, and the surrounding Wasatch foothills. The postcard features a 1¢ George Washington stamp and a crisp 1914 cancellation, placing this RPPC in the golden age of American street railways.?
