According to John Freeman, an expert on the Portola Festival: The ship was the Revenue Cutter “Golden Gate” which arrived at Mission St. Pier. Covarrubias in full costume, descended a gangplank to be met by Captain John G. Berry. The picture of the card most likely is Captain Berry, posing with Portola on the dock. As Covarrubias descended the gangplank, he appeared shaking, so he was greeted with a hand to steady him. That was not necessarily Capt. Berry. Most likely, the commanding officer of Revenue Cutter, then posed with him for this photo. The Mission St. Dock had other vessels discharging officers or crew, one of which must be the vessel behind the two men shaking hands." This information was obtained through a San Francisco Postcard Club friend of mine, Kathryn Ayres, without whose help I would not have been able to obtain it.Please email me with any questions you may have and you'll get a fast, friendly reply.
