RMS _Olympic_ was the first of the Olympic-class liners, which included her sisters the _Titanic _and _Britannic_. Her keel was laid for the White Star Line at Harland and Wolff in December 1908, she was launched in October 1910, and began her maiden voyage to New York in June 1911. In 1914, still as a passenger liner, she saved the crew of the _HMS Audacious_, and attempted to tow the mined battleship to safety. Toward the end of 1915 she was requisitioned as a troop ship, and carried over 200,000 troops before the end of the war. In May 1918 _Olympic_ sighted U-103, which had been preparing to torpedo her, and rammed and sank the submarine&mdashthe only known case of a merchant vessel sinking an enemy vessel during the First World War. Despite all of this, and other mishaps and adventures, she avoided the fate of her sister ships, and earned the nickname “Old Reliable” before being withdrawn from service and scrapped in 1935.
