This postcard captures Clark's Thread Works, once a massive industrial complex and the world's largest manufacturer of sewing thread. Founded in 1864 by Scottish brothers George and William Clark, the company became legendary for its O.N.T. (Our New Thread), specifically designed to work with the then-new sewing machines. Historical SignificanceThe "Great Mills": The company's expansion into East Newark in 1875 created a 13-acre site with 35 buildings. These mills were so significant that they were a key factor in the formation of East Newark as a separate borough in 1895.Engineering Marvels: In 1888, the facility featured the tallest chimney in the United States, standing 335 feet high.Global Giant: By 1896, the company merged with its rival, J&P Coats, to form a near-global monopoly in the thread industry.
