MT, Belt, Montana, RPPC, Main Street, Business Section, Cascade County, 1912 PM Product Photo Click Image for Larger Preview Product Information This is a nice vintage early real photo postcard showing a scene of the business section on Main Street in Belt, Cascade County, Montana. Hammet Brothers boots & shoe store is on the right along with E.R. Clingan General store plus many others. Belt was founded in 1886 as a mining town, after copper was discovered in the nearby Little Belt Mountains. The town was named for the leather belts used in the mining equipment at the time. As the mining industry grew, so did the town, with the construction of the Montana Central Railway in 1887, which connected Belt to other towns and markets in the region. In the early 20th century, the mining industry in Belt declined, and the town began to focus more on agriculture. Wheat, oats, and other crops were grown in the fertile soil of the surrounding Judith Basin, and Belt became an important hub for the transportation and processing of agricultural products.
