Middlesex, stanmore, the warren house (1922) rppc
The history of the warren house dates back 200 years. Now known as the stanmore islamic center building, it was built in the19 th century as a 90 room mansion and was owned and occupied by sir robert smirke, an early19 th century architect of renown who designed the british museum and the royal mint.
From 1851 to 1890 Charles Keyser, founder and owner of the Colne Valley Water Company, which brought fresh water supplies to Stanmore for the first time, owned it. On Sunday2 nd June 1907 The 'Observer' of the day reported the private visit of King Edward VII to Warren House, to visit his friends. His Royal highness was expected for lunch but did not arrive until late afternoon, because his car broke down on two occasions. Still in high spirits, the King stayed for dinner and did not leave until the clock struck the midnight hour. Thereafter it belonged to H.L. Bishoffsheims, a city banker and hospital benefactor. Then it changed hands to become Springbok House, an Old People's Home financed from South Africa. Subsequently it became a Jewish Educational Center. It was occupied for 12 years. London Jamaat purchased the building in 1984 to establish a multi-purpose religious center to cater for the growing social and spiritual needs of our community in the United Kingdom in the21 st Century.
