bg713 A rare 1988 exhibition advertising postcard for erotic artist Hans Scharer unused and mint.
HANS SCHÄRER was a Swiss Surrealist painter best known for his erotic scenes and glowing portraits of Madonna figures. Schärer held a life-long fascination for art of the naive or mentally ill. Adopting a straight-forward expressive style, he employed thick outlines and a primary palette across his oeuvre. Born on December 26, 1927 in Bern, Switzerland, Schärer went on to study at the Ecole de Commerce before deciding to become a painter. It was while living in Paris between 1949 and 1956 that he developed as an artist, and gradually began showing his work. In 1981, he participated in the Biennale in Sao Paulo, Brazil and in 1982 the Aargau Art Museum in Switzerland held his first retrospective. He attracted the attention of the international art world, and in 2013 curated his _Madonna_ series into the Venice Biennale. Today, Schärers works are held in the collections of the Fonds cantonal dart Contemporain in Geneva, The Museum of Everything in London, and the BSI Art Collection in Lugano, among others. The artist died on November 14, 1997 in Niklausen, Switzerland.
