_gordon procter was a 19-year-old rookie pilot who risked his life guiding a horsa glider in operation varsity, the 1945 mission that marked the start of the battle of the rhine. _
_he often recalled his own landing during operation varsity. He said: i had banked heavily to the right, then dived, hoping that i could get out of the range of the guns, which were fixed on our position. we were close to 200mph and my sergeant and i had to work very hard to pull out of the descent, which we did at just 300ft from the ground. Somehow we managed to land intact. sadly, we were the only horsa from our squadron to do so. in fact, we were one of only a few that made it completely undamaged out of the 400 horsas that took off that morning._
