Here is a nice FANTASTIC REAL PHOTO postcard view showing a BALLOON ASCENSION at the COUNTY FAIR with a SECOND WOMAN DANGLING FROM THE BALLOON...she is UPSIDE DOWN and a SPECTATOR FROM THE CROWD ENTANGLED IN A GUIDE ROPE from the Balloon and LIFTED INTO THE SKY!! The spectators thought it was "part of the act" and were disappointed the launch ended so quickly when the WOMAN DAREDEVIL ABORTED HER TRAPEZE ROUTINE and BROUGHT THE BALLOON DOWN and RESCUED THE WOMAN. I found a newspaper clipping of the event from the KINGSTON DAILY FREEMAN of August 30, 1906:WOMAN CARRIES UP WITH A BALLOON AT ELLENVILLE BY A DRAG ROPE WHICH CAUGHT AROUND HER ANKLE. COOLNESS OF THE AERONAUT, MAGGIE DAILEY. BROUGHT BALLOON DOWN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WOMAN WAS INJURED, BUT WILL RECOVER.More than 6,000 people in attendance at the Ellenville fair on Wednesday saw the most thrilling balloon ascension ever seen in this part of the country. The balloon was the center of a dense crowd of at least 4,000 people. Although every effort was made to keep the crowd back those in front were so eager to see that it was impossible to keep them out of danger. As the balloon went up the loose end of a drag rope attached to the huge bag near the top snapped around the ankle of a woman spectator, accidentally formed a hitch that held, and in a jiffy the involuntary aeronaut was whirled heavenward, dangling upside down in the air, waving her arms and screaming. Nobody fainted. Nobody groaned. Nobody was horrified. No woman wept or wrung her hands. The thrilling sight failed to thrill for the reason that everybody thought it was part of the show. The crowd was so dense and the start was made so quickly that not more than a score of persons knew there was anything wrong. The general verdict of the crowd was that it was "a bum ascension." Opinion was evenly divided as to whether the woman was a lay figure, or a trapeze performer. After watching to see her do a trapeze act in the air and faillng to see it, the crowd concluded that either the woman was a "dummy" or a poor performer. There was a stiff breeze blowing away from the fair grounds and the balloon traveled rapidly. When it reached a height of about 300 feet it descended rapidly. Tall trees hid it from the sight of the crowd for a moment and then it shot up agaln without any passengers, floated aimlessly, turned upside down, belched a great volume of smoke and collapsed. The crowd concluded that. Maggie Dailey and her parachute jump were a fake. Meanwhile Maggie Dailey was having the time of her life and exhibiting coolness and judgment that cannot be praised too highly. Her manager, who saw what had happened, shouted to her as the balloon was rushing upward, warning her not to cut loose the parachute. The weight of the accidental passenger, owing to the fact that the rope that held her was fastened near the top of the balloon, caused the balloon to careen. Nobody knew how securely she was held or at what minute the rope would loosen and allow her to drop. Maggie Dailey, realizing the situation fully, pulled the valve rope and brought the balloon down as rapidly as was consistent with safety. Being a trifle lower herself, she was able to alight first, seize the other woman and ease her fall. Otherwise the woman's brains would doubtless have been beaten out. They landed on the old race track, a quarter of a mile away from the starting point. The woman was unconscious and remained so for two hours. She was taken to the office of Dr. Alice Devine, who dressed her injuries, after which she was taken to Walker Valley, where she is spending the summer. She Is said to be a Jewess from New York named Roper. Her ankle was badly strained, a finger was broken and there was a contusion at the back of her head. She will probably recover but will be confined to the house for several weeks.. *********The OSTLIE ARCHIVES watermark is NOT ON THE CARD----I have been having a number of people copy the images*********** It is in VERY GOOD CONDITION with light wear, smudging/staining, silvering, light creasing BUT A FANTASTIC, RARE, ONCE IN A LIFETIME IMAGE!!-----------SEE THE SCANS.
