A great shot of LABOR UNREST at the city. An online search:There was sporadic violence after that, but the strike was essentially broken. Trouble had been brewing for months, with both the Columbus Railway and Light Co. and the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees posturing in the city's newspapers.
The central issue was union recognition. A state board charged with resolving the issue found both sides at fault and essentially told them on July 24 to work it out.
The union, which represented, depending on the source, 300 to 600 of the company's employees, went out on strike. Nonunion workers and 450 strikebreakers brought in by the company ran the city's streetcars.
Rioting broke out on July 27, with crowds surging around cars and blocking tracks with logs and boulders. Armed strikebreakers reportedly fired into the crowds, but no one was killed.
"At midnight, with the police exhausted, four persons injured, many cars broken, and 24 arrests made," _The Dispatch_ reported, Mayor George S. Marshall asked Gov. Judson Harmon to send in the troops.
In the months that followed, thousands of people ran riot through the city. One man was killed; another was injured when acid was thrown in his face. Streetcars, the main method of transportation in the city, ran sporadically and often with no passengers, as the two sides dug in. The streetcars were sometimes dynamited, derailed or pelted with stones.
The Guard restored order in early August. But problems flared a few days after they left on Aug. 7. The Guard returned on Aug. 15 and left for the last time at the end of August
