This vintage Japanese postcard depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Saichō (767–822), the founder of the Tendai school of Buddhism in Japan. The image shows the young Saichō during his investiture ceremony, likely at Kokubun-ji temple in Ōmi Province. The accompanying text provides a brief biography, mentioning his entry into the temple at the age of twelve, his ordination at fourteen, and his subsequent dedication to serving the nation. He was later posthumously granted the title Dengyō Daishi ("Great Teacher Who Transmits the Teachings"). Although the backs of the postcards show postal markings consistent with pre-1933 usage, the text on some of them definitively points to a 1937 publication date.
