Item Description

This vintage Japanese postcard from the 1930s depicts Saichō (767–822), the founder of the Tendai school of Buddhism, at Usa Hachiman Shrine after his return from China. Following his successful pilgrimage to study Buddhist scriptures, Saichō visited this important Shinto shrine, historically linked to the imperial court. The image shows Saichō receiving a purple robe ( hōe), a symbol of high status in Buddhism, likely bestowed upon him by the deity of Usa Hachiman in recognition of his achievements. The accompanying text describes Saichō offering his gratitude, performing Buddhist rites (hōe), and reciting and explaining sutras at the shrine. This event highlights the connection between Tendai Buddhism and both the imperial court and Shinto. While the backs of the postcards show postal markings consistent with pre-1933 usage, the text on some of them definitively points to a 1937 publication date, likely to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Mount Hiei's founding.
