Geographical note: haleakala is also known as the east maui volcano and is an enormous shield volcano that is responsible for forming over 75% of the land mass of the island of maui. The summit is just over 10,000 feet in elevation and looks out over an enormous depression nearly 80 meters deep with steep walls and volcanic cones.
The rare silversword species lives only on the slopes of this volcano, and this depression is, in hawaiian folklore, the home of the grandmother of the hawaiian demigod maui, who assisted him in catching the sun. The volcano's particular atmospheric conditions also make it one of the best locations in the world for ground-based telescopes.
An astrophysical complex known as science city has therefore been built up near its peak by a number of governmental and other research institutions for that purpose. For details, see: wikipedia/wiki/haleakal
