Item Description

This vintage Japanese postcard from the 1930s depicts two monks braving a snowy mountain pass, illustrating the challenges faced by travelers in ancient Japan. The accompanying text explains that Saichō (767–822), during his travels to spread Buddhist teachings, recognized the lack of lodging for travelers along the mountainous routes between Mino and Shinano provinces. To alleviate this hardship, he established free lodging houses, known as Kōzai-in and Kōjō-in, demonstrating his deep compassion for others. The text concludes by emphasizing Saichō's selfless dedication to serving the ruler, the nation, and all people. While the backs of the postcards show postal markings consistent with pre-1933 usage, the text on some of them definitively points to a 1937 publication date, likely to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Mount Hiei's founding.
