1912 birds'-eye view of the pennsylvania railroad depot in new york city color post card --- image of a beaux-arts style building with many columns in its long facade over two entire city blocks with some pedestrians on its wide sidewalks, horse-drawn vehicles, and early automobiles in the street with rooftops visible with riker's drug store advertisement in the foreground and a church spire in the background
Historical note: the old pennsylvania station was a historic and famously beautiful railroad station, a masterpiece of the beaux-arts style, which was designed by the architectural firm mckim, mead, and white and was completed in 1910. It was named for the pennsylvania railroad, which built it and was its original tenant, and it included the innovation of separating arriving and departing passengers, increasing efficiency.
Over time, however, decreased ridership led the railroad to downsize, and it sold the station's air rights, which resulted in demolishing the above-ground structures between 1963 and 1969 to make way for madison square garden and pennsylvania plaza. The resulting outcry resulted in much more support for architectural preservation nationally, which, eventually, led to formalized historical preservation.
