Item Description
Shenandoah River and Massanutten Mountain. This view was taken from the state highway bridge spanning the north fork of the Shenandoah River, the highway connecting the two towns of Strasburg and Front Royal, Virginia. The railroad bridge in the foreground is the second on this same site, the original having been built in 1854, when the Manassas Gap Railroad Company, predecessor company to the Southern Railway System, completed its line to Strasburg. Signal Knob on Massanutten Mountain is the background is 2005 feet above sea level and 1365 feet above the mean altitude of Strasburg.Posted from Kernstown (Winchester) Va. on October 18, 1933.
